GT Legends Review at Gaming Excellence

Now, GT Legends is solid yes, but thoroughly entertaining it is not. It has all the features of a solid racer, realistic sounds and handling, detailed textures and views that look good at any angle, replays included, even up to 95 cars, 21 tracks. It has scalable adjustments to every aspect such as deceleration power and handling to tweak you’re driving to suit your style, damage that blankets coverage from sparkly bumper to sparkly bumper.

I am no stranger to racing games. As a matter of fact, the reason I bought a Playstation was to play Gran Turismo when it first arrived on the scene. GT Legends is a racing simulation for the PC that comes to us from Viva Media, the folks who brought us GTR-FIA GT. If you have never heard of that title, suffice it to say it is arguably the best racing sim available for PC. GT Legends is the follow up to GTR-FIA GT, but it steps us back in time.

I don't know why it is, and I honestly don't really care, but despite my disdain for real-world automotive mechanics, I seem drawn to racing simulation games. I don't know how to drive, I have no desire to learn, I'll never be a grease monkey, and in fact, I usually get pretty nervous in speedy metal hulls. Yet I dive into the occasional vehicle sim with all the wild abandon one sees in those awkward guys at Ska shows, skanking away to the English Beat with absolutely zero clue that they have no rhythm and in point of fact look like complete idiots. That's me behind the digital wheel, a moron with virtual keys and a lead foot. What's the point of all this self-deprecation?

If you played GTR, you know that the creators of this game, Simbin, have a deal with the FIA to help them make the most realistic game possible. With GT Lengends they have continued that tradition, making a game that is complex and realistic enough to entertain the most knowledgeable of motor heads, but still have customizable difficulty levels that allows even the inexperienced drivers to have a good time.

Last summer, developer SimBin came out of nowhere with the release of GTR. After my initial disappointment with the way the Gran Turismo series was going, the release of GTR was a breath of fresh air, combining a realistic simulation experience with the accessibility of an arcade racer.

In GT Legends, from the same company who brought us GTR, you return to the Golden Age of motor sports, an age you're not too likely to remember if you were born after the premier and cancellation of the Andy Griffith Show. The 1960's and 70's of the golden age are defined by fast, blocky cars. They're the days of thunder, and for a racing fan, this is awesome stuff. GT Legends doesn't have the greatest presentation and its jump-in-and-play ideology might turn some off (especially with the heavy difficulty curve), but give it an hour or so and I'm sure that your affection for it, as did with me, will grow.

Racing is a very deep and complex sport that is usually mistaken for being entirely about which car has the biggest engine. Most racing fans know this is not at all true, and that the driver's skill and the handling of the car can have a much larger effect on the car's final position. The makers of GT Legends know this well, and it shows, as do many other details that come from true wisdom of the road.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to drive a stick-shift without actually having to get into a car, then GT Legends is probably the game for you. Even though, from a rational standpoint, telling someone to learn how to drive a car via practicing with a PC game is more than likely bad advice, I, personally, can’t help shake the feeling that I’m a professional racer as I crawl along route 30 in my 05’ Chevy Malibu after a few hours of playing GT Legends.

Europeans love racing games, it's right up their with their love of the WWII RTS. The continent that's given us Rally, Touring Car, Grand Prix, Formula One and Formula Four racing just can't get enough of games involving hot cars, real tracks and nitty gritty details. This love of a deep racing sim shows in GT Legends, a recently released PC title from Simbin, the guys who brought us the equally deep (and excellent) GTR FIA Racing, have taken the GTR engine and put it in the chassis of dozens of classic cars. Well, European classic cars to be precise, such as older Lotus' models, original Cooper Mini's, etc. You won't find any Ford GT's here, but you will find the deepest driving experience ever to be called a "video game."

In spring of 2005, developer SimBin and publisher 10tacle Studios dragged the PC racing world back to reality with the warmly received GTR: FIA GT Racing Game. In a time when virtual vehicular competition was moving inexorably in the opposite direction, GTR was a welcome respite for those who bled transmission fluid and desperately wanted to pilot authentic cars on authentic tracks against authentic competition. Less than a year later, SimBin and 10tacle return to the pavement with GTR's descendant, GT Legends, a game that benefits from SimBin's typically superb physics treatment and attention to detail. It also sports one very intriguing twist.

As you begin to delve into this discussion of Simbin’s excellent new driving sim GT Legends, I feel it is only fair to make a small disclosure. I am, have always been, and will always be a gear head. You know the type. . .dirty fingernails, back issues of Road & Track lying about, a broken connecting rod hanging proudly on the wall of the garage. . .so when I saw my first driving game in an arcade in the late 70’s, I was hooked.

SimBin has been one of the brightest stars in the sim racing world for the past few years, and now GT Legends — their second offering after the well-known GTR — has made it's debut. Jens "McGonigle" Lindblad spent considerable time analyzing the new racing sim.
