Enter “Cross Championship Racing 2005” for the PC. Now this is a typically classic off-road genre game at first glance, but once you really get under the hood you’ll find that this game has something that sort of sets it off from the rest: that’s depth. CRC 2005 is an off-road lover’s buffet of all-terrain racing.

The game calls itself 100% simulation, and it is definitely accurate as far as vehicle physics, real-time damage system, and dynamic modeling of tires, road surfaces and, but the designers were surprisingly able to put it all into a nice, neat, simple package that allows the new player to jump right into the driver’s seat and start racing.

I hadn't seen or heard an awful lot about Cross Racing Championship 2005 when I was given the chance to review it, so I wasn't brimming with excitement while installing I have to say. In all honesty the rally genre has never appealed to me at all, Colin McRae rally is one that springs to mind and I despised that game with a passion. But on the other hand I'm totally in love with the more fun car racing games out there, like Need for Speed and some of the various Formula 1 games that have popped up over the years. I have to admit that I did suspect that this was just another bloody racing game.

In a happier, more storybook world, I would now say something like, "But that all changed with Cross Racing Championship 2005 (CRC 2005, natch)." Ours is not such a world, my friend. Despite this, I enjoyed CRC 2005 very much.

CRC Review at Rewired Mind

Driving games for the PC are an interesting beast. In my experience they are either ultra-realistic sims, utterly dire, or one of the Need For Speed: Underground titles. So, understandably, when I read "mixing realistic motor-sport simulation and sheer driving fun" on the back of the Cross Racing Championship 2005 case, I assumed the worst. I was soon to find out just how wrong a man can be..

My main problem with simulations is that they are always too in-depth, while arcade games lacked depth. Of course it all depends on what you're looking for--in my case it was a racing game having realism, but not too much of it. CRC comes with a decent range of tuning options which don't go into deep detail, requires precision and concentration yet never feels frustrating (thanks to a broad physics model) and has looks combined with attention to detail. These attributes suck you into one of the most enjoyable racing games in recent years.

CRC Update Released
[01-08-2005 | JZ | Comments (5) ]
Invictus Games and Project Three Interactive today announced that a big update for Cross Racing Championship 2005 has become available through Invictus Live! - an online auto update utility created by Invictus Games which can only be used by owners of the full game.

The update fixes several minor sound issues and adds Windows 64-bit edition support, but the MAJOR upgrade is that several new game modes and racetracks have been added. The new tracks will range from volcanic islands and icy lakes, to off-road racetracks and original tracks optimized for multiplayer racing. The brand new multiplayer modes include: Return The Flag, Jamboree and Destruction mode, ensuring even more fast paced online fun (log on via All Seeing Eye). For all creative CRC2005 fans, Invictus Games also included a car building devkit.

The kit makes it possible to import your own car or edit original cars to your own taste.

Gabor Simon, programmer for Invictus Games: "With this dev kit players should be able to import the car of their dreams into CRC 2005. You don't have to be a programmer or a gear-head to use this kit, but if they want, players can dig deep into the behaviour of the cars and fine-tune suspension and other parts, rebuild engines, putting stickers on the chassis, making custom paintjobs for the car, tweaking gear ratios, LSD ratios, and much, much more. The possibilities are endless."

Raymond Snippe, PR Executive for Project Three Interactive says: "This is the update all CRC2005 fans have been waiting for. We had tons of fun testing the new maps and modes and are very sure players will enjoy this update and devkit as much as we did. It's a true 'must have' for all the CRC2005 fans".

First, I must admit that I’m not much of a racing fan. A couple of races against some friends can be fun, but don’t ask me to play a gazillion races to unlock a new track or vehicle. This is why I was a bit hesitant about reviewing Cross Racing Championship 2005 for the PC, but after browsing through the website I decided to give it a go.

Here we are again, your entity-about-town with his hands glued firmly to yet another virtual steering wheel, careening wildly about tracks at unreasonable velocities ...when did I become the local racing reviewer? Well, no matter, because this go 'round, I've got a possible gem from a Euro dev team to show you, featuring racing in a somewhat different style than most of us Americans will be familiar with.

CRC Final Demo Released
[27-05-2005 | JZ | Comments (39) ]
Invictus Games and Project Three Interactive today released the highly anticipated final demo of their upcoming race simulator ‘Cross Racing Championship 2005’.

In CRC 2005 the player will be able to drive ultra realistic race cars in a wide variety of racing classes: Autocross, Rally Cross, Off-Road, Rally-Sprint, Rally, Road Racing and Circuit Racing. CRC 2005 will appeal to both rally fans and road-racing fans with its crossover approach to vehicles and race circuits.

Raymond Snippe, Development and PR Executive said: “Project Three and Invictus Games have been working closely on CRC 2005 for the past few months, making sure all comments, feedback and wishes from the CRC 2005 community were mixed into the equasion. We are very pleased with the result and look forward to the reactions from the CRC community.

Gabor Simon, Programmer at Invictus Games added: "The game and overall gameplay have changed a lot since the Hungarian release of the tech-demo. The handling and behaviour of the cars are much more realistic now, and so are the tracks and environments. Cars are just handling and responding way better. In addition, we fine-tuned the tyres and varied the road surfaces to make the races faster, and in some cases harder."

The demo weighs about 130MB and supports both single and multiplayer. Play over the Net using “All Seeing Eye” or use the ingame serverbrowser for playing over a LAN.

CRC Official Trailer
[14-05-2005 | IS | Comments (16) ]
Project Three Interactive and Invictus Games have released an exciting new trailer for their soon to be released racing game for PC "Cross Racing Championship 2005", which went gold yesterday.

Cross Racing Championship 2005 is a unique race simulator developed by Hungarian studio Invictus Games, who were also responsible for '1nsane' (published back in 2000 by Codemasters).

Raymond Snippe, Development & PR Executive for Project Three stated: "By looking at this trailer, fans of the race genre will get a good impression of what to expect from this release. If you are afraid of dust, sand, snow or mud, then you'd better start looking for something else, because in this race simulator you will find out soon enough that the environments are just as dirty as your opponents. My advice: fighting the elements, while fighting your opponents you'd better buckle up right now."
